12/7/2023 0 Comments Superhero hype rpgs![]() A ton of new superhero rpgs tend to pop up and then never get mentioned again, or if they are, it’s never really upvoted or reinforced. I think this is why this post is actually interesting to see come up every few months or so. I mean, even modern DnD, the poster child for “the whole goal is to kill monsters”, at least paces things out with some skill mechanics and a few spells made explicitly for interludes in the action. Maybe it’s “fight supervillains”, but that’s no where near enough: you can’t just have smack down fights and big action set pieces the whole time and expect that to be fun for more than a few sessions. So a ton of superhero rpgs kind of lack that “what am I supposed to do?” component that a game has. Most superhero rpgs can assume some level of comic book type story, with supervillains and epicness, but even that is a super broad concept. Like, think about it: superpowers is a very, very vague setting that consists of heroes with powers, and everything else is basically setting dependent. Both of them handle a specific kind of superhero story, and as a result, both do a much, much better job than most superhero games. Masks and City of Mist are both awesome: they may have learned this as a result of the creators’ PBtA influence, but, basically: RPGs tend to be stronger when they hit a niche. I kind of doubt anything can beat Masks for me, since it’s not only an amazing superhero game but the perfect PBtA game, plus I love that teenage superhero storytelling possibility! Every mechanic works perfectly, pushing the players straight into teenage drama and identity struggles. r/boardgames - Boardgames that isn't TTRPGs.Hide "Table Troubles"-threads Related Subreddits Hide promo)-threads - (Crowdfunding, Free, Product, Self Promotion) You can discuss these Weekly Free Chat-thread.ĪMA Guide tips if you want to hold an AMA Filters ![]() Off-Topic: Book trade, Boardgames, wargames, video games are generally off-topic.Comments deemed abusive may be removed by moderators.
